Subaru Legacy vs. Subaru Impreza

The Subaru Legacy vs. the Subaru Impreza - Which AWD Car is Right for You

Drivers in the Scarborough and Westbrook area trust the Subaru brand name when they're looking for a quality, reliable vehicle that delivers style and the latest features. At Pape Subaru, we're proud to be a part of the Subaru tradition of excellence at our South Portland dealership, and we want to help you get to know our entire lineup better and select the best fit for your needs.

Subaru is the manufacturer behind a great variety of topnotch cars and crossovers, most of which have standard all-wheel drive that lends reliability, peace of mind, and added traction when you need it most, a nice feature during Maine winters. At our Broadway dealership, we provide Windham and Saco drivers with a variety of great options to consider, including the Subaru Impreza and Subaru Legacy.

Two of our most popular models, and two of the only cars on the market today that have standard all-wheel drive, the Impreza and the Legacy have a lot to offer. Although similar, they have a lot of differences and things that appeal to different types of Portland driver. To help you see which one would best suit your needs, we've highlighted some of their key similarities and differences for you here in this side-by-side comparison. Read on to learn more.

Size and Style

The most notable difference between these two cars is in their size and design. The Subaru Legacy is the larger of the two models, offering a midsized sedan style with four doors and seating for five. The Subaru Impreza, on the other hand is a compact car, measuring around 10 inches shorter than the larger Legacy model.

While the Legacy offers a larger size for sedan shoppers, the Impreza has something that the Legacy does not - versatility of design. After all, not only can you get the Impreza as a compact sedan, but it's also available as a compact hatchback, letting you decide on the style that works best for your life. The Subaru Legacy is strictly a sedan with no other style options available.

Interior Space and Cargo

As the larger of the two models, the Subaru Legacy also has a slightly larger interior, particularly in its rear seat, where it has more legroom and elbow room than the smaller Impreza. When it comes to cargo space, however, the numbers between these two models vary greatly depending on the style you prefer. For example, as a sedan, the Legacy has a larger trunk than the Impreza sedan, with 15.1 cubic feet in the Legacy and 12.3 cubic feet in the Impreza.

However, if you choose the Impreza hatchback instead, that car offers more cargo space than both other options. The hatchback design of the Impreza is versatile and flexible and it allows the compact car to hold around 20.8 cubic feet of gear, more than both the larger Legacy and the sedan Impreza.

Power and Performance

As mentioned, the signature Subaru all-wheel drive system comes standard on both the Subaru Legacy and the Subaru Impreza, regardless of style or trim level choice. But their performance similarities pretty much end there.

The larger Subaru Legacy sedan requires more power and oomph under its hood, delivering two great powertrain options depending on trim choice. Drivers get their pick of either a 182-horsepower four-cylinder engine or a 260-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder engine, with a continuously variable automatic transmission serving as the standard equipment for both.

The Subaru Impreza, on the other hand, offers one engine choice for its entire lineup of trims and styles. Requiring less power to get up and go, the Impreza tops out at 152 horsepower from its standard four-cylinder engine option.
